The KHMC program is organized around four Montessori classes: two morning and two afternoon sessions. Each class size is a maximum of 20 students with one certified Montessori teacher and an assistant. Each classroom is a carefully prepared environment designed to challenge and support the child as he first experiences, and then abstracts knowledge of the world about him.
Montessori Toddler Program
The Toddler program follows the philosophy of Dr. Montessori. We nourish the natural development of the two year old child. The work encourages order, concentration, co-ordination, independence and sharing in a peaceful environment while preparing him/her for the three-six year old program. A child does not need to be potty trained to enter the toddler program.
We have twelve children, one certified Montessori teacher and two assistants. Snack time is packed by the parents and served at 10:00 am. Lunch is provided by the school and served at 11:30 am. Nap time is 1:00 – 3:00 pm. We are a five day a week program, that offers 4 half day and 8 full day spaces. We’re open from 7:00 am. – 6:00 pm.
By “following the child” we create a love for learning.
3-6 Montessori Classes
Our Montessori classes meet 5 days a week for 2 1/2 hours from 8:15 to 11:00 in the morning or 12:15 to 2:45 in the afternoon. During this time, the children are in one of our Montessori classrooms with a certified Montessori teacher and a teaching assistant.
Since our founding in 1965, the need for full-day care has expanded rapidly. KHMC gave a great deal of thought and effort to meeting this need, while preserving the integrity of our educational program. We provide the children with a day full of rich activities, while maintaining a consistency with teachers and a ratio of at least one adult to ten children. Full day children can be dropped off as early a 7 am, and need to be picked up any time before 6 pm. The program includes a snack, group or individual planned activities aligned with the Ohio Early Learning Development Standards, including outside play, arts/crafts, seasonal themes, games and food preparation.
Extended Day Program (For Afternoon Montessori Class Children 12:15 – 2:45)
Children in an afternoon Montessori class are eligible for the Morning Care Program. Children can attend this program either 8:00 am – 12:15 pm or 2:45 pm – 6:00 pm. and includes planned activities aligned with the Ohio Early Learning Development Standards, outside play, a morning snack, and a hot catered lunch.
KHMC also offers a full-time summer program for enrolled students. It includes field trips and thematic activities. Sign up for the summer program begins in April. The program is for children ages 2-6 years old who are currently enrolled or will be starting KHMC in the fall.
KHMC also offers a kindergarten program for students. The kindergarten year is the culmination of experiences and learning acquired by the children during the prior two years. Both full-day and half-day children are encouraged to complete their kindergarten year at KHMC. In addition to their daily half-day class, kindergartners will meet with their teacher in groups of no more than 10 children, for an additional three afternoons or three mornings. During this time, the advanced Montessori materials are presented and skills appropriate for first grade entrance are approached.
We have strong feelings about academics for children this age. We feel that testing, drills and work sheets are highly inappropriate, result in short-term, trivial results and can in fact be harmful. At the same time we believe that by using more appropriate methods and materials, children can deal with far richer and more sophisticated learning tasks than those dictated by dittos and drill-and -practice pedagogy. Our children study constellations, and planets, fossils, the human body, different climates and cultures, etc. They construct a time-line and develop a sense of their place in time and space. In these exciting contexts, reading, language arts and math become means rather than ends in themselves.
Additionally, we recognize and respect the changing social needs of the five-year-old. In a small group of friends and classmates, the child finds his place in relationship to his peers and develops feelings of self-confidence and responsibility for others, and becomes an eager lifetime learner.
Our kindergarten program meets all certification requirements of the State of Ohio for entrance into first grade. Children whose birthday falls after the September 30 cut off date for public school kindergarten entrance are required to be tested by their local school district for readiness into our program. Children who successfully complete the public school readiness testing will be considered for early enrollment in our program. All testing information results must be forwarded to KHMC.
